Dominion Sponsors First "LEED" Certified Habitat Home in Connecticut

Dominion Logo

Energy company Dominion has partnered with Habitat for Humanity of Southeastern Connecticut to build Habitat’s first environmentally friendly and energy efficient “GREEN BUILD” home on Town Street in Hadlyme. This GREEN BUILD home is the third local Habitat home that Dominion has generously supported with volunteer resources and monetary funds. For Dominion, this is the second home in which it is the lead sponsor. A few of the questions guiding the GREEN BUILD entail considering what building materials to use and how to use the materials to generate less waste. Some of the more specific items/activities included in the GREEN build will be dual flush toilets provided by Covanta Energy of Southeastern CT, landscaping and native plantings by the Trillium Garden Club, rainwater harvesting, in addition to the Energy Star plus materials Habitat includes in every build. The LEED certification process will be monitored and scored by the Conservation Services Group (CSG).

GREEN homes create less waste during the construction process and, once built, consume less energy, water and natural resources, according to the LEED Web site. The new approach to building will reduce the environmental impact of construction and will lead to an energy efficient home that will help the soon to be owners, the Welsh family, minimize their energy bill. With energy efficiency and conservation a central part of this build, it makes for a nice synergy that Dominion is the lead supporter of this Habitat project.

“Dominion and the employees at the Millstone Power Station are pleased to provide the financial resources as well as working side by side with Habitat for Humanity on this project. We are especially pleased this will be the first Habitat home in Connecticut to conform with the new LEED standards making it one of the most energy efficient in the region,” stated Dan Weekley, Managing Director-Northeast.

“Habitat is thrilled with Dominion’s interest in and sponsorship of this very special project. Their investment in this LEED certified home is a great opportunity for Habitat and our partners to learn how to build more efficiently and these lessons will be brought to all future projects. Dominion’s sponsorship in this home, will impact all future homes, and for their insight we are tremendously grateful”, stated Terri O’Rourke, Executive Director.

Saving Water and Helping Habitat for Humanity

We wanted to let you know about a very simple and worthwhile way for you to support Habitat for Humanity.  All it takes is a few minutes of your time.

Visit http://www.savewateramerica.com/ and learn about the importance of water conservation and water-saving products.  For every visitor who takes a simple 3 question quiz, Kohler will donate $1 in water-saving products to Habitat for Humanity.

Kohler wants to donate a total of $1 million in water-saving products, but they need your help to spread the word.  As of today, May 20th, product donation level is at approximately $520,700.

If the goal of $1 million in water-saving product is reached, Kohler estimates that they can provide plumbing products for 550 to 600 Habitat homes in the United States this year.

Please visit http://www.savewateramerica.com/ and take the quiz.

Welcome to Habitat for Humanity of Southeastern Connecticut

Habitat for Humanity of Southeastern Connecticut (HFHSECT) is a local unit of Habitat for Humanity International, a nonprofit interdenominational Christian housing organization. HFHSECT exists for the sole purpose of providing simple, decent, affordable homes in partnership with low-income families in need throughout New London County.

Our goal is to make a ‘forever’ difference in the lives of others, to help them fulfill their dream of homeownership, and to eliminate sub-standard housing in Southeastern Connecticut.

Since 1987, HFHSECT has completed 40 houses throughout New London County. This has been achieved in partnership with our Habitat families, who contribute at least 400 hours of “sweat equity” to Habitat in order to be eligible to buy their own home which HFHSECT sells to them at cost, with a no interest mortgage. Habitat homes are built through the dedication of the many volunteers who share their time and talents for construction and related activities and through the financial contributions of the many caring individuals, faith based organizations, businesses and civic groups who are our neighbors in this community.
