Volunteer!

Habitat for Humanity of Southeastern Connecticut is volunteer driven. The Board of Directors, the committees, the family partners, most of the builders, nearly all of the people at the ReStore and the office support are volunteers.

Volunteers are Habitat SECT's most precious and reliable resource.

We are so excited that you are interested in volunteering with Habitat for Humanity of Southeastern Connecticut!

Some brief information about volunteering - Habitat welcomes anyone 14 and older to volunteer at the ReStore. Anyone 14 and 15 must volunteer with and adult. Anyone 16 and 17 years old is welcome to volunteer independently as long as they can prove to be mature and responsible. Volunteers who are 16 years old and older are welcome to volunteer on the build site. However anyone under the age of 18 must volunteer with and adult on the build site.

Groups are welcome to volunteer on site in groups of 5 people or less any time they would like. A group larger than 5 people would need to work with Habitat to plan the day. Habitat is open to planning exclusive build days for groups of up to 15 people. This would allow your group to be the only people on site for the day, if you would like, aside from Habitat Construction Leaders. There are a few more guidelines with group build days. To begin volunteering each person will need to take the Foundations of Habitat Orientation and Safety Training Class before volunteering in any capacity. This 1 hour class teaches what Habitat for Humanity is, what we do locally, Building site and ReStore safety, information on the available volunteer opportunities and training on how to sign up for those opportunities. Click Here for more information on this class and directions on how to sign up for it.

Habitat always needs committee members, builders, painters, office workers, attorneys, fundraisers, landscapers, plumbers, electricians, excavators, architects, accountants, grant writers, graphic artists, printers, cashier, drivers and more.

  • Build Site Volunteers

    CONSTRUCTION SITE VOLUNTEERS

Habitat for Humanity of Southeastern Connecticut relies on our volunteers to build homes for families in need in our area. We require all volunteers to attend a ‘Foundations of Habitat' orientation session prior to volunteering in any capacity. Click Here for information on this class.

We currently have construction activities on the following days: Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and occasionally Sunday. You must register in advance for construction activities - you can now do so on our website through Volunteer UP.

Please note that children under age 16 are not allowed at the work site in accordance with US child labor laws. Workers between the ages of 16 through 18 must be accompanied by an adult, and are not allowed to use power tools.

When volunteering at a Habitat construction site, you may want to bring your own work gloves, hammer, or tool belt, but if you do not have these items they will be available at the work site. Small injuries, such as splinters, can be avoided with wearing proper shoes and gloves. Steel-toed work boots are useful for preventing most injuries to the feet, but they are not required. Sandals or other open-toed shoes are not permitted on the work site. Long pants are usually recommended, except during very hot weather, as well as long sleeves to help protect your arms. Clothing should not be excessively loose, such that it might get caught in tools or machinery and cause injury.

Depending on the weather, you may want to dress in layers (which can be modified as the day progresses) and bring sunscreen and/or sunglasses. Bring a hat, safety goggles if you think you need them.  Bring a tool belt if you have it. There will be tools on site, but many people prefer to use their own tools and anything you can bring with you is welcome, except power tools - we use only our Habitat power tools at our work sites. Remember to take your personal tools home with you at the end of the day.

In effort to help preserve the environment and our budget, bring a water bottle and a to-go coffee mug that can be refilled throughout the day, instead of using disposable cups.

  • Restore Volunteers

    ReStore Storefront Sign

Habitat for Humanity of Southeastern Connecticut operates a ReStore in Salem, CT.  The store sells new and gently used construction and household goods that have been donated by companies and individuals.  All proceeds are used to support the building of more homes in Southeastern Connecticut.

We need volunteers interested in staffing the store. We are in particular need of individuals who can come on a regular basis and help pick up merchandise that has been donated and other consistent volunteers who would be interested in being a cashier. Volunteers are also needed for stocking, cleaning, organizing, office support and many more possibilities

All volunteers must take the Foundations of Habitat Class before volunteering.

Please note: Volunteers at the ReStore must be at least 14 years old.  Anyone under 18 years old must be accompanied by an adult when volunteering.
